A Little About Depression
What Is Depression?
Depression, where does it come from? Why am I depressed? These are questions many of us ask ourselves over the course of a lifetime. Most of us have felt depressed at some point during our lives. But for many, depression seems to just show up out of nowhere, for no apparent reason. Frequently it can be a result of some form of loss often referred as situational depression. Some situational causes might be the loss of a significant relationship, whether with a person, pet companion. Such losses don’t have to be obvious or recent. Other forms of loss that might lead to depression are debilitating health problems, unemployment, empty nest, some types of betrayal, incarceration, or significant disappointment in ones dreams or plans. These are just some of the significant life altering events which may cause someone to become depressed. Depression is often treated with a combination of prescribed medication and psychotherapy (sometimes called “talk therapy”). Most psychotherapy takes place with a licensed and trained mental health care professional. Depending on the circumstances, a client meets either one on one with the therapist, through online telecommunication or with other clients in a group setting.
