Loss Examples

Loss: Very Personal, Often Private, Always Unique

Grieving is the result of significant loss. Death and the breakup of a relationship are just two of many types of significant loss. Many go unacknowledged. Grief is unique to each person. We must learn to honor that in ourselves and in others. Every loss is unique and significant to the  person grieving it. Sometimes we can’t even name it.

The musical superstar, John Lennon, is often credited with the adage: “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.” Whether they’re plans, hopes or expectations, when those plans go awry, we feel a sense of loss, sometimes in the form betrayal, or disappointment. Often our response is to say “Hey, that’s life” or “It’s not that big of a deal.” If that loss is “a big deal,” is significant, we may well be experiencing feelings associated of grief, Remember, death is not the only life event that results in grief.
